Its population in 2009 was<!--more--> about 197,169.[1]<\/p>\n<p>Salalah is the third-largest city in the\u00a0Sultanate of Oman, and the largest city in the Dhofar Province. Salalah is the birthplace of the former\u00a0sultan,\u00a0Qaboos bin Said. Salalah attracts many people from other parts of Oman and the\u00a0Persian Gulf region\u00a0during the\u00a0monsoon\/khareef\u00a0season, which spans from June to September. Tourists visit Salalah during this season. The\u00a0climate\u00a0of the region and the\u00a0monsoon\u00a0allows the city to grow some vegetables and fruits like coconut and bananas. There are many gardens within the city where these vegetables and fruits grow.<\/p>\n<p>City districts and suburbs<br \/>\nAl-Dahariz<br \/>\nAl-Haffa<br \/>\nAL-Qouf<br \/>\nAl-Mughsail<br \/>\nAl-Mutaaza<br \/>\nAl-Saada<br \/>\nAl-Wadi<br \/>\nAuqad<br \/>\nCity Center<br \/>\nEastern Salalah<br \/>\nIttin<br \/>\nNew Salalah<br \/>\nWestern Salalah (also known as\u00a0Al-Gharbia, and\u00a0Al-Qantra)<br \/>\nLanguage<\/p>\n<p>Arabic\u00a0is the official language. The unofficial, unwritten language known as\u00a0Jeballi\u00a0is the second most spoken language and the\u00a0mother tongue\u00a0of many in Salalah and its surrounding areas, with 25,000 estimated speakers as of 1993.[5]<\/p>\n<p>English is the official foreign language and the most spoken language of the\u00a0expats.\u00a0Malayalam\u00a0is another popular language and together with\u00a0Tamil, Telugu, along with\u00a0Hindi\u00a0and\u00a0Somali\u00a0are widely spoken language among expatriates.<\/p>\n<p>Tourist attractions[edit]<\/p>\n<p>Wadi Darbat<\/p>\n<p>Salalah has an international tourist economy with many\u00a0Middle Eastern\u00a0tourists during the Khareef season from June to September. In this season the\u00a0mountains\u00a0turn green, and there are many waterfalls to visit, such as at\u00a0Wadi Darbat, Ain Athum, Ain Tubrook, and Ain Khor.[6]\u00a0There are four reputed tombs of Islamic prophets: Nabi Imran, possibly the Virgin Mary&#8217;s father but more likely a local prophet; Nabi Ayoob, the biblical\u00a0Job; Nabi Houd; and Nabi Salih.[7]\u00a0The city received more than 600,000 tourists during the khareef season in 2017.[8]\u00a0Amongst the Dhofar Governorate&#8217;s cultural attractions is the Salalah carnival, which includes the usual rides, family activities, concerts, cultural events and vendors.<\/p>\n<p>Air transport<br \/>\nSee also:\u00a0Salalah International Airport<\/p>\n<p>Salalah International Airport\u00a0mainly caters to domestic flights from Muscat and some International flights from\u00a0India\u00a0and regional Arab countries such as\u00a0Qatar,\u00a0U.A.E, and\u00a0Saudi Arabia.\u00a0Oman Air, the national airline operates five flights daily from Salalah to\u00a0Muscat, the capital city and also two flights to\u00a0Dubai\u00a0weekly. Oman Air introduced Oman Air Pass for regular travelers between Salalah and Muscat.[10]\u00a0Qatar Airways\u00a0has daily flights from Salalah to Doha connecting to over 130 destinations worldwide. Very convenient connections are available to destinations in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Australia. There is also a direct weekly flight from and to\u00a0Kochi,\u00a0Kozhikode\u00a0(Calicut), and\u00a0Thiruvananthapuram\u00a0operated by\u00a0Air India Express\u00a0for the\u00a0Malayalee\u00a0expatriates. During the Khareef Season (Monsoons) there are weekly flights to other international destinations including\u00a0Sweden\u00a0and\u00a0Turkey. There are also transit flights to almost all countries.
